CONTACTS TO HELP AS A VOLUNTEER
ADEGA. The Galician Association for Ecological Defence continues to organize voluntary cleaning works in Galician beaches. They have carried out some tests and found areas with several fuel layers of more than 20cm. Telephone Number for Volunteers: 680 420 807. 13 March 2003

THE QUESTION: ARE VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED?

Volunteer support is and will be needed in many areas. However, if institutions are unable to arrange your participation, one alternative would be to prepare yourself autonomously, trying not to be a heavy burden for the local population. That is what we call "full-fledged volunteers". We should not forget that the main beneficiaries of our help are those who make their living out of the sea, fishermen and seafood and mussel collectors among others. For this reason, my suggestion is that you organise an independet trip and contact the Cofradías or Fishermen Associations (though some of them do not understand the need of volunteers). All offers or suggestions can be submitted to the forum. IMPORTANT WARNING TO AVOID DISAPPOINTED VOLUNTEERS. As the clean-up operations develop, more specialized volunteers are needed for the more inaccessible areas (i.e.fire-fighters). The "average" volunteer will often have to get used to the idea of a not-so-heroic action. However, this is equally necessary, involving the collection of the small patches of fuel left by tidal surges in sandy and rocky areas. Large-scale concentrations of fuel can still appear overnight, in an unexpected fashion. The clean-up mechanism may not, therefore, be readily available. If you are a member of a Cofradía or you are already organising on-the-ground volunteer action, you may contact me (roset@accede.org). and we can publish your initiatives. There are many people who are willing to help but find it difficult to know how.

New. A management volunteer (Pilar Picas) requests volunteer help in specific regions and the long-term cooperation of specialized volunteers ("permanent volunteers") Read her letter.

All the information you need to help safely. GO

The accident. SASEAMR: Spanish Sea Rescue and Safety Society.
http://www.cadenaser.com/especiales/documentos/sasemar/pag1.htm

This official document displays the trajectories followed by the Prestige tanker from the time of the accident -when it was being towed into the high seas- to the actual sinking. It served as the basis for a bitter discussion between Mariano Rajoy (Spain´s Deputy Prime Minister) and Jesús Caldera (an opposition leader). It was broadcast by radio station Cadena Ser Highly controversial
